It holds water in soil for houseplants, it makes decorative "trees" for train layouts and is an excellent absorbent for oil spills. Peat is also used in the production of Irish Whiskey. The peat is burned in a kiln, exposing the malted barley to the smoke. This imparts a smoky and earthy flavor profile to the whiskey.
