I don't believe French filmmakers ever had the equivalent of the Hays Code inflicted upon them. ZouZou for example is just an ordinary French melodrama but it has couple of instances of near toplessness and an African-American leading lady in Josephine Baker - It's almost like an alternate celluloid history of the 1930s. It’s amazing that expat Josephine Baker would have had to drink from a separate water fountain back home but in Paris she was treated like an equal. I can only imagine what it was like for black guys back then, going from the UK or USA to places like France for the first time where white women weren't off limits lol
